A Wooded Hold Forty Minutes North of the Gulf

Step onto this parcel off Mill Creek Drive and the first thing that surprises you is the quiet, given how close you are to the busiest stretch of coast in Florida. The ground is sandy underfoot, the pines are thin enough to walk between without much thinking, and the land rises gently west to east. It's the kind of wooded Florida that exists ten miles inland from the postcard and doesn't get photographed much.

DeFuniak Springs sits just to the north. It's a quiet chautauqua town built in 1885 around Lake DeFuniak, one of only two naturally perfectly round lakes in the world. The whole downtown was laid out as a ring road to match it, and the chautauqua auditorium still holds summer lectures the way it did when steam trains brought New Yorkers down for the season. Ponce de Leon Springs sits 27 miles east, the Air Force Armament Museum is 31 miles south, and the 30A beaches are about 40 minutes down the road once you've pointed the truck toward the Gulf.

Now the honest dirt. Access takes a minute to sort out. The most practical route is Watson Road toward Knight Terrace, which is how the neighbors get in. There's also a private road that threads between Mill Creek Drive and Watson Road, and a footpath south toward Prince Lane if you're walking it. Cell service runs about one bar on the parcel, so plan on a hotspot or Starlink if you work remote. Power doesn't run to the lot, but the neighbors to the west pull service off Mill Creek Drive, so a run is plausible with a plan and a power company conversation. One small note for the record: loose dogs turn up in this area from time to time, so walk the parcel with a stick and a friendly voice. There's a small hunting cabin on a nearby lot, which is as neighborly as this stretch gets.

Florida's inland pockets don't make the brochures. They just sit there, quiet and sandy and unhurried, while the coast fills in around them. A piece of that is worth owning while it's still the kind of place you have to explain to your friends.
